US Secretary of State: We’re Engaged in Conversations with Several Countries About the Situation in Sudan

Washington – Sudanhorizon
US Secretary of State Mark Rubio has stressed that his country is currently engaged in conversations at various levels with partners and neighbors of Sudan to determine what his administration can do regarding the ongoing events in Sudan.
Rubio added in press statements published by the US State Department website today (Friday) that he engaged in conversations with a number of leaders of countries and partners on the African continent, including Ethiopia and Kenya, over the past 72 hours, during which the issue of recent developments in Sudan was raised.
A journalist asked him on the topic of Sudan, which was not the main topic of the Secretary’s press briefing, i.e. Ukraine and Russia, and the US position and assessment of reports that the Sudanese Armed Forces had retaken the Republican Palace and “kicked out” the Rapid Support Forces militia, as well as the bombing of markets located in the Rapid Support Forces area.
The Secretary said that he had tackled this issue in his conversations. He added that the US Administration was deeply concerned that the situation would return to where it used to be a decade ago or less, and so they do not want to see that. He said the Trump administration is trying to understand this, and is engaging with US partners to get their views on what the USA could do this regard, and what contributions the United States could make to achieve stability at this time.
The Secretary explained that this is not confined to the Sudan, as his administration is conducting similar contacts with regard to many regions in Africa, such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda.
The Secretary explained that the reason for contacting countries in the region to form an opinion on what his country can do was that the U.S Administration finds itself in some similar areas asking its regional partners for their views on how it can provide maximum assistance and engagement, as well as with our partners outside the region.
The US Secretary indicated that his last contact in this regard was with the UK Foreign Secretary, adding that he spoke with the UK Foreign Secretary yesterday about this matter.
It is to be noted that the UK is planning to organize an “international meeting” on Sudan next April, a matter the Sudanese government has expressed reservations about, as it was not involved in its arrangements and is not aware about its objectives.
