New York – Sudanhorizon
An informed diplomatic source has indicated that the special session on Sudan held by the UN Security Council on Friday at the request of Denmark and Britain was closed and confined to the Council’s member states.
The source has pointed out that the members of the Security Council have expressed deep concern over the escalation of violence, especially in the city of Al-Fashir and its surroundings, North Darfur State.
The session has also strongly condemned the ongoing and increasing attacks launched by the rebel Rapid Support Militia on El–Fashir for now several months.
The members have condemned the attack that targeted the Saudi Maternity Teaching Hospital in the town on January 24, which resulted in the death of more than 70 patients who at the time were receiving critical care and the injury of dozens.
The source said the member states have affirmed Resolution 2736 (2024) and called on the RSF Militia to end the siege imposed on Al Fashir. They also called for an immediate cessation of fighting and for calm in the region.
The Council stressed the need to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure in accordance with international humanitarian law and international human rights law. It also urged all Member States to refrain from foreign interference that could fuel the conflict and urged them to support efforts to achieve lasting peace. It also reminded all parties and Member States of the need to comply with the arms embargo imposed in accordance with paragraphs 7 and 8 of Resolution 1556 (2004), reaffirmed in Resolution 2750.
