Sources to Sudanhorizon: Five-Party Mechanism Delays Sudan Dialogue Consultations to September

Sources close to the Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue process, sponsored by the five-party mechanism comprising the African Union, the United Nations, the League of Arab States, the European Union, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), have revealed that the consultations scheduled for July 27–29 have been postponed until September.

In an exclusive statement to Sudanhorizon on Wednesday, the sources said the decision was made to allow for the inclusion of a broader range of political and community groups, as well as women’s and youth representatives, in the consultation process.

According to the sources, the previous arrangements provided for the participation of only a limited number of representatives from these groups. They added that these participants had effectively monopolized representation and served as representatives of the Somoud (Resilience) Coalition.

The sources explained that the five-party mechanism recently conducted consultations among its five member organizations and the principal stakeholders participating in the dialogue. During those discussions, participating groups requested that the consultations be postponed to allow more time for broader consultations and for the reclassification of invited participants from various sectors, arguing that a number of them represented the Somoud Coalition.

The sources further stated that participants stressed the existence of an active civil society and other political forces within Sudan that also deserve the opportunity to be represented and to participate in the consultation process.

According to the sources, the next round of Sudanese dialogue consultations in Addis Ababa will include the participation of new political and civil society groups alongside those that have regularly taken part in previous rounds. They said the revised arrangements are intended to ensure a more balanced and equitable representation in the upcoming consultations.
