Sudan’s Permanent Representative: Proxy Militia War Hindered Creativity and Innovation Efforts in the Country
Geneva – Sudanhorizon
Sudan’s Permanent Representative to Geneva, Ambassador Hassan Hamid, has stressed Sudan’s commitment to strengthening and protecting intellectual property (IP) as a fundamental and effective tool for economic growth, innovation, entrepreneurship, and the protection of national assets of cultural and economic value.
Addressing the opening session of the 68th General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), he reviewed Sudan’s efforts in enhancing national capacity building in the field of IP and the projects being implemented in partnership with WIPO. These include the development of a national IP strategy, the registration of geographical indications to reflect Sudan’s wealth of high-quality products and resources closely linked to its geographical environment, and the establishment of a national training center and technology and innovation centers.
He added , however, that the proxy war waged by the rebel militia, with ongoing military and political support from its regional sponsor, and its systematic targeting of infrastructure, have hampered these efforts and inflicted severe repercussions and widespread damage on the creativity and innovation sector, entrepreneurs, and research centers.
Hamed called on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to support recovery efforts and capacity building for the intellectual property system. The Permanent Representative stated that Sudan looks forward to an active role for the organization in supporting recovery and reconstruction efforts, rebuilding the intellectual property system, and promoting innovation and sustainable development in Sudan.
