Al-Burhan in Turkey: Behind the Multiple Meetings

Multiple meetings have taken place since Friday afternoon for the Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, following his arrival in the Turkish city of Antalya to participate in the 2025 Antalya Diplomacy Forum in its fourth edition, at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Al-Burhan is accompanied by Ambassador Dr. Ali Youssef, Minister of Foreign Affairs, General Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal, Director of the General Intelligence Service, and General Mirghani Idris, Director of the Defense Industries System.

The Sudanese Sovereignty Council stated in a press release seen by Sudanhorizon that its chairman, Al-Burhan, met with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, in Antalya.

The meeting discussed ways to enhance and elevate bilateral relations between the two countries across various fields, along with the situation in Sudan and the latest political developments following the victories of the Sudanese Armed Forces, in addition to many other issues of mutual interest.

Attending the meeting were Sudan’s Ambassador to Turkey, Nader Youssef, General Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal, and General Mirghani Idris.

Al-Burhan also met with the Prime Minister of Libya’s Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Mohammed Dbeibeh. The meeting reviewed bilateral relations between the two countries and discussed ways to strengthen and develop them across different sectors, along with the evolving situation in Sudan and key issues of shared concern.

The meeting underscored the importance of unifying political stances on several regional issues and supporting efforts to achieve peace, security, and stability in Sudan.

Al-Burhan also held talks with Julius Maada Bio, President of Sierra Leone.

The discussion covered the path of bilateral relations and the means to support and develop them in various fields, as well as prospects for enhancing cooperation to serve mutual interests. They also explored a number of regional and international matters of mutual concern.

The two presidents affirmed their commitment to advancing the relationship in a way that meets the aspirations of their peoples and fosters closer cooperation.

Al-Burhan also met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The meeting addressed bilateral ties between Sudan and Turkey and the means of supporting and enhancing them, in addition to exploring fields of joint cooperation and how to develop them for the benefit of both nations.

The talks also touched upon the current situation in Sudan, efforts toward peace, reconstruction, and recovery, and reviewed regional and international developments of shared concern.

The Chairman of the Sovereign Council expressed appreciation for Turkey’s supportive stance towards Sudan in regional and international forums, for defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and for Turkey’s continuous humanitarian support to the Sudanese people during the crisis.

In a development related to Al-Burhan’s Antalya meetings, Sudanese Foreign Minister Ambassador Dr. Ali Youssef met with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Turkey.

The minister renewed his thanks to the Russian Foreign Minister for his ongoing communication, referring to the fruitful meeting they had recently held in Moscow, according to a statement from the Sudanese Foreign Ministry seen by Sudanhorizon.

During the meeting, the minister provided a detailed briefing on the situation in Sudan, highlighting the recent battlefield victories by the Sudanese Armed Forces, especially the regained control over the capital, Khartoum.

He emphasized the Sudanese government’s commitment to restoring security and stability across the country.

The minister praised the steady positive progress in bilateral relations and the ongoing coordination between the two countries in all fields. He also noted the ongoing arrangements for holding the joint ministerial committee meetings, scheduled to take place in Port Sudan at the end of this month.

For his part, the Russian Foreign Minister reaffirmed his country’s steadfast support for Sudan and its commitment to backing the Sudanese government in international forums, particularly at the UN Security Council. Lavrov also praised the current level of political and diplomatic coordination between the two sides.

In the same context, Lavrov pointed to the scholarships offered by Russia to Sudanese students and expressed Russia’s willingness to consider increasing them in the future, should there be a real need—emphasizing Russia’s commitment to capacity building in Sudan and enhancing cooperation in education and training.

The two ministers reaffirmed the importance of the shared relationship and their keenness to continue coordination and consultation on various regional and international matters.
