Sudanese FM Meeting with IOM Director in Geneva Centers on Voluntary Return
Geneva – Sudanhorizon
Ambassador Mohi El-Din Salem, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, met on Wednesday in Geneva with the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Amy Pope. Discussions focused on ways to enhance joint cooperation to support voluntary return, reintegration, and early recovery programs in safe areas of Sudan.
During the meeting, the Minister stressed that creating suitable conditions for the return of citizens is a top national priority for Sudanese government. He pointed to the importance of a genuine transition from the emergency humanitarian response phase to the rehabilitation of basic services and the consolidation of stability in areas of return.
The Minister also reviewed developments in the humanitarian and field situation, particularly in El Obeid and the Kordofan region, warning of the negative impact of targeting civilian infrastructure on the movement and sustainability of voluntary return.
For her part, Amy Pope affirmed IOM’s commitment to continuing its support for Sudan and strengthening its partnership with the government in areas such as displacement tracking, providing necessary support to returnees and host communities, and mobilizing international efforts to respond to humanitarian and development needs. Both sides agreed to continue coordination and joint work to advance sustainable voluntary return efforts and promote early recovery, linking humanitarian relief to long-term solutions and in line with Sudan’s national priorities.
