Red Sea State Approves 150% Increase in Dockworkers Wages
Sudanhorizon – Nazik Shamam
The Red Sea State has approved a new increase in the wages of Dockers, both on and off ships, by approximately 150%.
A document issued by the state, obtained by Sudanhorizon, sets April 26th as the date for implementing the decision. The document also stipulates adding two workers to each loading and unloading unit on ships.
Muhannad Awad, a member of the National Chamber of Exporters, confirmed that the wage increase for loading and unloading workers will raise the cost of exports and weaken their competitiveness in global markets.
He told Sudanhorizon that the problem is not the principle of the increase itself, but rather the lack of a comprehensive vision. He questioned whether this increase is linked to a real improvement in port efficiency, or whether it will be reflected in faster procedures, reduced congestion, and infrastructure development, or whether it was simply intended to appease loading and unloading workers.
Awad explained that the port workers have very significant influence, making the governor like someone “seeking refuge from the scorching sun in fire”, stressing that adding new burdens at this stage will lead to adverse results, such as reducing the volume of commercial activity or pushing some operations into informal channels
