Chairman of the Sovereign Council Receives “Quintet” Delegation

The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met today at the Republican Palace with the delegation of the “Quintet Mechanism,” which comprises the United Nations, the African Union, the League of Arab States, IGAD, and the European Union.

The meeting addressed peace efforts and the political process in Sudan.

The Chairman of the Sovereign Council welcomed the delegation and provided an overview of the overall situation in Sudan.

Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Head of the African Union High-Level Panel on the Sudan Crisis, speaking on behalf of the delegation, described the meeting as constructive. He added that the delegation’s visit aims to link the Quintet Mechanism’s efforts undertaken outside Sudan with Sudanese initiatives from within the country.

Ibn Chambas added: “We firmly believe that our collective efforts will ultimately contribute to advancing a credible and inclusive political process, leading to a transition toward a democratic government that reflects the aspirations of the Sudanese people.”

He noted that the Quintet Mechanism delegation also met with the Prime Minister and the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and would hold a series of consultations with key Sudanese civil and political stakeholders within the country.

He emphasized the Quintet Mechanism’s firm conviction that there is no military solution to the war in Sudan, stating that any sustainable political process must be accompanied by practical, tangible steps to protect civilians and halt hostilities.

He reiterated the Quintet Mechanism’s full respect for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, as well as its rejection of the establishment of any parallel structures.
