Dr Al-Fatih Rabie Abdullah, Director of the National Quarantine Authority, chaired an emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss the implications of the Ebola virus outbreak in neighbouring countries. The technical committee attended the meeting, along with directors of quarantine sectors in the states, directors of entry points at both Port Sudan International Airport and Khartoum International Airport, and officials responsible for maritime entry points and land border crossings.
The Director of National Quarantine delivered a comprehensive briefing on the critical importance of the meeting, which forms part of early preparedness efforts to address the repercussions of the Ebola virus following the announcement of confirmed cases in several neighbouring countries.
The meeting reviewed the current situation at entry points and border crossings, examined the latest epidemiological developments, and discussed the formulation of an urgent emergency response plan to confront and contain the outbreak across all ports and crossings.
Participants also heard detailed reports from the various sectors, the technical committee, and border administration departments. These reports included the officially approved case definition for Ebola infections, as well as assessments of logistical and technical needs and shortages across all sectors in order to address challenges and remove operational obstacles in the field.
The meeting approved the adoption of a health information form for all travellers arriving from countries where cases of the disease have been recorded. It was also agreed that circulars would be issued to airlines requiring passengers to complete these forms on board aircraft before landing. This measure is to be preceded by a coordination meeting with airline companies and relevant authorities to organise and implement the procedures.
The participants concluded the meeting with several directives and assignments, most notably instructing the Director of the Red Sea Sector to oversee the provision of personal protective equipment for staff and to organise urgent training courses beginning with quarantine personnel in the sector.
The meeting further directed the preparation of an urgent emergency plan covering all operational areas for submission to the General Administration for Emergencies and Epidemic Control for approval and funding. Emphasis was also placed on ensuring the readiness of screening areas in Port Sudan and Khartoum to receive suspected cases and travellers arriving from affected countries, as well as preparing quarantine isolation centres in coordination with the relevant states.
