Following the Visit of the Turkish Waqf Al-Khayrat Delegation: Africa Quran House Begins to Recover

Hassan Abdel Hamid
On the morning of Tuesday, 23 June 2026, I received a telephone call from Mr Ahmed Mirghani, a lawyer, inviting me to accompany a delegation from the Turkish Waqf Al-Khayrat Foundation on a visit to the Africa Quran House. I gladly accepted the invitation and postponed all my engagements that morning in order to participate in what I considered an important visit.
Both institutions—the Africa Quran House and Waqf Al-Khayrat—hold a special place in my heart, as they do in the hearts of many Muslims around the world, in recognition of the invaluable services they provide to Islam and Muslims across numerous countries.
The Africa Quran House is renowned for its specialisation in printing the Holy Qur’an. It is regarded as the fourth institution worldwide dedicated exclusively to Qur’an printing, following the King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Qur’an, Turkey’s Waqf Al-Khayrat Printing House, and an Iranian institution, believed to be located in Mashhad.
Despite its distinguished religious standing, derived from its specialised role in printing the Holy Qur’an, the Africa Quran House was subjected to a devastating attack and widespread destruction at the hands of the Dagalo militia. Printing presses, binding equipment, the electricity generator, electrical cables, and virtually all production facilities were destroyed. Even the palm trees in the House’s gardens were not spared from the fires.
Following the liberation of Khartoum and the defeat of the Dagalo militia, the House’s Board of Trustees and Board of Directors embarked on restoring and rehabilitating the extensive damage inflicted upon the institution and its facilities.
I had visited the House towards the end of last year, and the scale of the destruction deeply saddened me. I could only sympathise with those responsible for the daunting task of rebuilding the institution. During this latest visit, however, I was delighted—as would any Muslim—to witness clear signs of recovery, the resumption of operations, and the resumption of printing the Holy Qur’an, all made possible by the remarkable efforts of its staff and generous contributions from both the state and private donors.
Mr Yousif Al-Dawi, Director of External Relations and Marketing at the House, guided us through the various departments. We observed the dedication and determination of the employees, who continued their work despite restoration efforts remaining incomplete. Through their perseverance, they have already restarted several production lines and begun printing new copies of the Holy Qur’an.
Nevertheless, despite this encouraging recovery, the House still requires considerable support from Muslims worldwide to complete the remaining restoration work and fully restore its operations.
The visiting delegation from the Turkish Waqf Al-Khayrat Foundation consisted of Mr Abdul Qadir Daraji and Mr Emra Şahin, both from the Turkish city of Sivas and followers of the Risale-i Nur movement inspired by the renowned Turkish scholar and reformer Imam Said Nursi. They had been commissioned by Sheikh Said Nuri, patron of the Foundation and spiritual guide of the Risale-i Nur community, to assess the situation in Sudan firsthand.
During their visit, they carried out numerous charitable activities and implemented humanitarian programmes sponsored by Waqf Al-Khayrat.
The Waqf Al-Khayrat Foundation is a charitable organisation headquartered in Türkiye. It oversees and implements a wide range of humanitarian projects across Africa, Asia and Europe. Its activities include supporting orphans, drilling water wells, delivering humanitarian relief and aid, while it is particularly distinguished for its Islamic outreach work. As mentioned earlier, the Foundation also operates one of the world’s major Qur’an printing facilities. Sudan has benefited for many years from the Foundation’s charitable initiatives.
Finally, I extend my sincere appreciation to Mr Ahmed Mirghani, lawyer, together with his colleagues Engineer Hassan Abdullah, Engineer Hossam Mohamed Musa, and Sheikh Bashir Abdullah of Waqf Al-Khayrat Sudan, who organised this visit and extended exemplary hospitality to the visiting delegation.
