Deputy Head of Farmers’ Union to Sudanhorizon: Summer Season Hinges on Government Financing Commitment

Sudanhorizon – Nazik Shammam

The Deputy Head of the Rainfed Farmers’ Union, Ghareeg Kamal, has said that the success of Sudan’s summer agricultural season depends on the government’s ability to deliver the financing recently announced by the Ministry of Finance.

Speaking to Sudanhorizon, Kamal said, “If the announced funding is made available, it will resolve the financing challenges facing farmers.” However, he expressed concern over the limited functionality of the Agricultural Bank of Sudan’s mobile banking application, noting that it is not widely used or accessible to farmers across the country.

He added that the application’s daily transaction limit of SDG 200,000 is insufficient to meet farmers’ financing needs.

Kamal also pointed to the shortage of cash liquidity and the financing cap of SDG 50 million per beneficiary as major obstacles to securing adequate funding for the agricultural season.

He called for the inclusion of digital payment platforms operated by other well-known commercial banks in financing agricultural activities, arguing that broader participation would improve access to funding and increase the likelihood of a successful farming season.

Last Thursday, Finance Minister Dr. Gibril Ibrahim announced that the government had approved the establishment of a banking finance portfolio exceeding SDG 3 trillion, with contributions from all banks operating in Sudan. The Ministry of Finance will guarantee the portfolio as part of urgent government measures aimed at ensuring the success of the country’s summer agricultural season.
