Sudan’s Minister of Minerals, Nour El-Daim Taha, inaugurated the Central Reference Laboratory of the General Geological Research Authority in Atbara on Thursday.
The minister described the opening of the new facility as a strategic step toward strengthening the scientific and technical infrastructure of the mining sector and supporting the government’s efforts to build a modern, knowledge-based mining industry driven by advanced technologies, thereby enhancing Sudan’s attractiveness to mining investment.
According to a press statement issued by the Authority’s Media Office, the minister said the laboratory represents an investment in scientific research rather than simply an analytical facility. It provides advanced capabilities for testing geological and mineral samples to the highest standards, improving the accuracy of geological data, enhancing exploration and evaluation activities, and supporting informed investment decisions. He added that the Authority serves as the state’s principal scientific reference institution in the field of earth sciences.
For his part, River Nile State Governor Dr. Mohamed Al-Badawi Abdel Majid described the laboratory as a significant addition to the state’s scientific and research infrastructure, noting that it will serve as an advanced research center for scientists and university students.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the Geological Research Authority, including allocating land for its future expansion projects.
Meanwhile, Haroun Al-Toum, Director General of the General Geological Research Authority, said the inauguration reflects Sudan’s ability to recover and rebuild despite current challenges.
He explained that the laboratory had been fully rehabilitated using national expertise following the damage sustained by the Authority’s facilities during the war. The laboratory will serve as a national reference center for chemical and geological analysis, providing services to government institutions, universities, mining companies, and investors.
Al-Toum added that the Authority is steadily implementing a package of strategic projects, including a nationwide geological survey, the development of reference laboratories, initiatives related to construction materials, salt production, drilling fluids, and petrochemicals, as well as the rehabilitation of Sudan’s national seismic monitoring network. He also announced plans to visit the Northern State soon to oversee the implementation of the Authority’s programs.
Dr. Mustafa Hamid, a chemical engineer and Director of the Laboratory, said the reopening marks a major advancement in strengthening the scientific infrastructure of Sudan’s mining sector.
He noted that the laboratory is equipped with a comprehensive suite of state-of-the-art analytical instruments, which will reduce dependence on overseas laboratories, shorten processing times, lower costs, and enhance investor confidence.
Dr. Hamid also expressed appreciation for the support provided by the Ministry of Minerals, the Authority’s senior management, and the River Nile State Government, which helped make the project possible.
