Al-Burhan to the British Envoy: Sudan Expects the International Community to Take Action to Alleviate its Suffering, Not Just Words

Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon

The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, has stated that the Sudanese people need the international community to address their suffering as a result of the violations committed by the terrorist Rapid Support Forces militia and its supporters. He added that the Sudanese people need the violations in El Fasher and the displacement camps to stop more than they need to hold conferences here and there, pointing to the targeting of civilian and service facilities and infrastructure projects by the rebel militia.

Al-Burhan received the UK’s Special Envoy to Sudan, Richard Crowder, at his office in Port Sudan on Wednesday, in the presence of the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hussein Al-Amin. The envoy briefed the Council Chairman on the nature of the conference called for by the United Kingdom in London in mid-April.

The Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs said in a press statement that the British envoy provided extensive information about the London conference on Sudan, indicating that his country was keen for the participating parties to be from the international community, and that there would be no participation from any Sudanese parties.

The Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs added that the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council confirmed to the envoy Sudan’s desire for Britain, through its position on the UN Security Council, to work to change the stereotypical image of the reality of the crisis. He pointed out that the militia had not respected the UN Security Council resolution to lift the siege of El Fasher, while the Council had taken no action in this regard.

The Chairman of the Sovereignty Council urged Britain to rectify its positions, based on the historical ties that bind it to Sudan, and affirmed Sudan’s welcome of any international effort that addresses the real issues facing the Sudanese people.

For his part, the British Special Envoy said the meeting represents an opportune opportunity for diplomacy and dialogue, noting that Sudan is now marking the second anniversary of a harrowing war that has brought severe suffering to the Sudanese people.

The envoy pointed out that the Sudanese army’s openings in recent days will usher in a new era for citizens, as well as noting the widespread destruction caused by the war.

He emphasized the urgent need to protect civilians in El Fasher, pointing to clear evidence of violence against innocent civilians and the targeting of civilian facilities. He called on Sudanese leaders to shoulder their responsibilities in alleviating the suffering of the people and rebuilding society and the political system to prevent a relapse into war.

The envoy emphasized that the international community will unite to support Sudan, noting that the British Foreign Secretary will host next week the largest international gathering in support of Sudan since the Paris Conference held last year, along with his counterparts from the European Union and the African Union, along with a number of international organizations. He stated that the aim of the conference was to bring peace to the Sudanese people and end their suffering, and not to impose solutions from abroad. Stressing that no Sudanese political body had been invited to the conference.
