Two UNSC Sessions This Week Devoted to Sudan

The UN Security Council (UNSC) will hold two sessions this week to address issues related to the security situation and the impact of the war on education, in Sudan. The sessions will take place on Wednesday, August 5, and Friday, August 7, according to the Council’s Week Ahead, brief issued on Sunday.

The Wednesday session is scheduled to be a closed-door consultation on Sudan. It was requested by Denmark and the United Kingdom (the the penholder on Sudan) to discuss the humanitarian situation in the country, particularly developments in Darfur, Blue Nile, and Kordofan.

The Security Council indicated that the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, is expected to brief the Council during this session.

The weekly also stated that on Friday, August 7, the Council will hold an Arria-formula meeting titled “Safeguarding Education in Sudan: Investing in Peace, Recovery and Stability” This meeting is being organized by Somalia in cooperation with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Liberia.
