Official Egyptian Statement onthe Suez Earthquake

The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics in Egypt issued an official statement this morning (Monday) detailing the earthquake felt by residents of Greater Cairo and several other Egyptian governorates early this morning.

The institute confirmed that the earthquake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale, explaining that the stations of the National Seismic Network recorded the tremor at 3:00:34 AM local time, with its epicenter located 38 kilometers from the city of Suez.

According to the statement, the earthquake occurred at latitude 29.61 degrees north and longitude 32.30 degrees east, with its focus at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The institute noted that a number of citizens reported feeling the earthquake, while also confirming that no reports of casualties or property damage had been received as of the time of the statement’s release.

The tremor sparked concern among citizens, particularly in Greater Cairo and the Suez Canal and Delta governorates, with social media users sharing posts describing feeling their houses shake for several seconds before dawn.

The Gulf of Suez, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the Red Sea region are among the most seismically active areas in Egypt, because of their location at the intersection of several tectonic faults associated with the movement of the African and Arabian plates. This makes them prone to earthquakes of varying intensity from time to time.
