Agricultural Cooperation Between Sudan and China Paves Way for Post-War Recovery

A workshop for Sudanese Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation officials and private sector representatives began today (Tuesday) in Beijing, China. The workshop is organized by the Center for Foreign Economic Cooperation of the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), within the framework of the South-South Cooperation Program between China and the FAO.
The opening session was attended by the Sudanese Ambassador to China, Omar Issa Ahmed, the Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Dr. Fatima Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed Rahma, the FAO Representative in Sudan, the Deputy Director of the Chinese Center for Foreign Economic Cooperation, as well as the Ministry delegation and private sector representatives.
Sudan National Radio correspondent, Osama Mukhtar, reporting from Beijing, stated that the workshop featured intensive discussions on agricultural cooperation priorities, with a particular focus on agro-processing and the transfer of modern technologies. There are clear Sudanese aspirations to benefit from Chinese expertise in rehabilitating the agricultural sector’s infrastructure.
In his address, Ambassador Omar Issa Ahmed emphasized that the workshop reflects the depth of the partnership and spirit of cooperation between Sudan, China, and the FAO. He noted that it presents a significant opportunity to enhance institutional and technical capacities and exchange expertise in agricultural modernization and achieving food security. He explained that the participation of both the public and private sectors reflects Sudan’s commitment to developing this partnership and benefiting from China’s pioneering experience in agricultural development. He also expressed his appreciation for the support provided by the Chinese government and the FAO in organizing the program.
Ambassador Omar Issa reviewed the history of agricultural cooperation between the two countries, affirming that China is one of Sudan’s most prominent trading partners in agricultural products. He commended China’s initiatives in supporting agricultural modernization in Africa, technology transfer, and capacity building, which contribute to the reconstruction of the agricultural sector and the strengthening of food security.
For her part, Dr. Fatima Mohamed Ahmed stressed the strength of Sudanese-Chinese relations, expressing Sudan’s aspiration to benefit from Chinese expertise in agricultural modernization, technology transfer, investment, joint research, and capacity building, in support of reconstruction efforts and economic development.
For his part, the FAO representative in Sudan indicated that the training program was designed according to Sudan’s priorities in the areas of agricultural processing and sector development, emphasizing the importance of practical training in achieving the desired results.
Ms. Liu Huifeng, Deputy Director of the China Center for Foreign Economic Cooperation, affirmed the deep-rooted friendship between the two countries and the importance of strengthening agricultural cooperation. She highlighted Sudan’s significant agricultural potential and China’s advancements in agricultural technology, seed production, irrigation, machinery, agricultural processing, and capacity building. She considered the workshop an important platform for exchanging expertise, transferring technology, and supporting the reconstruction of Sudan’s agricultural sector.
