UNICEF Launches Polio Vaccination Campaign Targetting Half a Million Children in Darfur
Zalingei – Sudanhorizon
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced on Sunday the launching of a new campaign to vaccinate half a million children against polio in Darfur.
UNICEF stated on its account in X platform the campaign teams will vaccinate more than 500,000 children under the age of five with the oral polio vaccine this week in Central and West Darfur.
It noted that this is the second round of polio vaccination campaign, emphasizing that each dose is a shield protecting children from a preventable and life-threatening disease.
On August 26, UNICEF provided 5.8 million doses of the oral polio vaccine to the vaccination center in El Geneina to protect 2.3 million children under the age of five from polio in 65 areas across Darfur.
Central and North Darfur are suffering from outbreaks of childhood diseases, particularly measles, amid calls for regular vaccination campaigns. On July 15, UNICEF and the World Health Organization warned that children in Sudan are at risk of deadly diseases after vaccination rates fell to their lowest levels in 40 years.
