Political Tensions in Tanzania: Police Warns, Accuses External Actors of Destabilizing Security
Dar-es-Salaam – Sudanhorizon
Tanzanian police announced they are closely monitoring online activity and messages circulating on social media, where some users are encouraging what they call “open-ended peaceful demonstrations” planned for December the 9th ,2025
An official statement issued Sunday by Tanzanian police spokesperson, Deputy Police Commissioner General David Msimei, warned that the online mobilization associated with these so-called open-ended peaceful protests poses a serious threat to national peace, stability, and public safety. He added, “Their aim is to destroy our country and return us to the suffering we experienced on October 29 and the days that followed.”
The Commissioner stated that digital surveillance and intelligence conducted by the police revealed widespread coordination among groups using social media platforms to incite chaos and encourage actions that could paralyze the country. He indicated that the individuals behind the mobilization are inciting youth to disrupt essential services.
He added that their monitoring revealed coordinated instructions calling on those trained in the use of weapons to be ready on that day. He said they also monitored messages directing people to disrupt the country by shutting down businesses, blocking roads, destroying communication towers, paralyzing essential services, inciting attacks on hospitals, obstructing medical services, looting property under the pretext of hunger, and targeting public employees wherever they may be.
He explained that there were extremely dangerous phrases being used, containing messages threatening to harm, attack, or even behead participants in the so-called protests. He emphasized that this incitement constitutes a serious criminal offense and threatens to undermine the country’s economy, social order, and the safety of its citizens. He added that the volume and nature of the messages circulating demonstrate clear preparation for a crime, not any legitimate public expression.
Deputy Police Commissioner Missimi assured the public that the police, in cooperation with other defense and security agencies, will continue to protect the nation’s interests, lives, and property, ensuring its stability and safety throughout the country.
The Republic of Tanzania is experiencing a severe political crisis following the elections held about a month ago, which were accompanied by widespread violence and rioting, and mutual accusations between the government and the opposition, with human rights reports indicating that about 700 people were killed as a result of the clashes between protesters and police forces.
