Riyadh – Sudanhorizon
The Sudanese government has signed a joint declaration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in support of the country’s Industrial Recovery Programme. The declaration was signed on behalf of the Government of Sudan by Ms Mahasin Ali Ya’qub, Minister of Industry and Trade, and on behalf of the organisation by its Director-General, Mr Gerd Müller.
According to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA), the signing took place on the sidelines of the 21st session of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) General Conference, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 23 to 27 November.
The declaration aims to assist Sudan in its efforts to rebuild the industrial sector, particularly by enhancing the added value of agricultural products, attracting investment to agro-processing centres, and reducing post-harvest losses. It also seeks to strengthen water-related industries, the pharmaceutical sector, and green manufacturing, and to provide support for industrial policy advisory services and national capacity-building.
In her statement to the UNIDO General Conference, the Minister of Industry and Trade called on member states, regional and international financing institutions, the private sector, and research centres to support the Sudanese government’s efforts, in cooperation with the UNIDO Secretariat, to implement the Industrial Recovery Programme. She affirmed the government’s commitment to carrying out this programme, which aims to support inclusive and sustainable economic and social development, and to enhance peace and stability in the country.
She also praised the cooperation programme between Sudan and UNIDO, noting the organisation’s continued presence and work in Sudan following the outbreak of the rebellion, and expressed Sudan’s aspiration for further cooperation in the coming period.
