Sudanhorizon – Nazik Shamam
The Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries expects the resumption of red meat exports to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the coming days.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Animal Resources, Dr. Ammar Al-Sheikh, confirmed that Saudi Arabia has lifted the ban on Sudanese red meat exports.
Al-Sheikh explained in an exclusive statement to Sudanhorizon on Thursday that one final step remains before exports can resume, which is the approval of export slaughterhouses and verification that they meet all required health and technical standards.
Saudi Arabia is considered one of the largest importers of Sudanese red meat and live livestock.
The livestock sector contributes approximately 20 percent of the gross domestic product and accounts for about 40 percent of non-oil exports, despite a decline in production due to the impact of the war.
According to official estimates, Sudan has more than 107 million head of livestock, making it one of the country’s most important sources of foreign currency.
