Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon
The Ministers of Energy and Agriculture discussed prospects for cooperation between the two ministries to advance agriculture in Sudan and address challenges related to electrical power and joint projects involving hydropower generation and irrigation.
This came during a meeting between the Minister of Energy, Mutasim Ibrahim Ahmed, and the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Ismat Qurashi Abdullah, at the latter’s office today.
The meeting covered several projects requiring joint efforts to achieve full agricultural productivity, foremost among them increasing the operational capacity of the Mina Power Station in Sennar State, which supplies the Rahad Agricultural Project—critical for the success of both the winter and summer seasons, covering 450,000 feddans—along with other urgent shared projects.
The Minister of Energy affirmed that his ministry is a key partner to the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation due to their shared responsibilities, particularly in hydropower generation and irrigation. He emphasized the ministry’s continued commitment to giving the agricultural sector top priority due to its direct link to food security.
For his part, the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation praised the efforts of the Ministry of Energy in the reconstruction of the country, noting its responsibility to provide electricity and fuel services to all areas in Sudan affected by destruction caused by the militia. He also pointed out that the Mina Power Station requires 6 megawatt-hours to operate at full capacity.
