UN Agencies Resume Operations from Khartoum

Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced on Monday it is relocating its main office back to Khartoum, the first UN agency to return to the capital since the outbreak of war more than two years ago.
After the outbreak of the war, the government made Port Sudan, eastern Sudan, the point of running the country’s affairs, and UN agencies and diplomatic missions relocated there.
The IOM said in a terse statement on its account in X platform that it has ” officially reopened its office in Khartoum, becoming the first UN agency to re-establish a presence in the city since April 2023”.
It indicated that this relocation confirms IOM pledges to reaffirm its enduring support to Sudan.
The Governor of Khartoum State, Ahmed Osman Hamza, participated in the inauguration of the resumption of IOM’s operations, along with other officials, including a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to a statement by Khartoum State Media, the head of the IOM mission in Sudan, Mohamed Refaat, said that the agency’s relocation to Khartoum “confirms the return of life and its recovery from the war.” He explained that Khartoum is witnessing the return of many Sudanese, expecting more than a million people to return to the state by the end of this year.
The statement indicated that the IOM headquarters in Khartoum will later host a number of United Nations agencies.
