Sudan Notifies Red Cross of RSF Violations as well as Involvement of Foreign Mercenaries

Geneva – Sudanhorizon
Sudan’s Permanent Representative in Geneva, Ambassador Hassan Hamid Hassan, briefed the Director-General of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Pierre Krähenbühl, and his senior assistants concerned with Sudan’s file, as part of ongoing awareness campaigns regarding the siege of El Fasher and the involvement of Colombian mercenaries fighting alongside the rebel militia.
The ambassador outlined the stages of mercenary recruitment and their growing participation in recent attacks on the city of El Fasher, noting that the bringing in of mercenaries from overseas to fight within the ranks of the rebel militia constitutes a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and the established principles of the United Nations Charter.
The Permanent Representative also condemned the international community’s silence over the city’s siege, which has lasted nearly a year and a half, and the failure to take deterrent measures against the militia, which has blatantly disregarded UN Security Council Resolution 2736 and continued to defy the appeals of the United Nations, the African Union, and international partners. He further highlighted the crimes of the terrorist militia, including the blockade and starvation of innocent civilians in the towns of Al-Dana and Kadugli in South Kordofan State.
For his part, the Director-General of the International Committee of the Red Cross affirmed that they are closely monitoring the situation in El Fasher and its surroundings with growing concern, as well as the increasing reports and information regarding the involvement of foreign mercenaries.
He also stressed that the organization is giving these developments significant attention and that the overall situation in Sudan remains a top priority for the ICRC’s work and activities in the country, expressing appreciation for the cooperation the organization’s office in Sudan and its branch offices across the states continue to receive.
