Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ambassador Muhyiddin Salem received a telephone call Saturday morning from Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.

Fletcher expressed his appreciation for the Sudanese government’s understanding of the urgent humanitarian situation in some parts of Sudan and its continued decision to keep the Adre border crossing open for the delivery of humanitarian assistance. He said the UN is ready to cooperate and coordinate with the Sudanese government to ensure the continued operation of the crossing.

Fletcher also said that cooperation between the relevant Sudanese government authorities and the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan is proceeding exceptionally well, with a high level of coordination and no significant obstacles.

For his part, Foreign Minister Muhyiddin Salem expressed his thanks and appreciation for the cooperation he has received from Fletcher. He also praised the efforts of Denise Brown, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, and affirmed the government’s readiness to maintain cooperation and coordination with UN agencies operating in Sudan.

Salem noted that the Sudanese government recognizes the importance of the Adre crossing in delivering humanitarian assistance to people in need, stressing that this requires further coordination and joint work with the United Nations and its relevant agencies.

The Foreign Minister and Fletcher agreed to maintain coordination between them and to hold a meeting in New York, attended by relevant Sudanese government officials, on the sidelines of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly meetings scheduled for September.
