UN Concern Over Reports of 60 Deaths from Hunger in El Fasher

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Sudan (OCHA) expressed concern over reports from El Fasher indicating that more than 60 people died within a single week due to famine and malnutrition.

In its regular bulletin on Tuesday, the UN office confirmed that famine was documented for the first time nearly a year ago in Zamzam IDP camp in North Darfur State, and it is expected to spread to other areas.

In a separate context, the United Nations said its local partners reported more than 5,300 suspected and confirmed cases of cholera, with 84 related deaths since June 21, most of them in Tawila locality, which hosts 330,000 displaced people from Zamzam camp and the city of El Fasher.

It noted that overcrowding, deteriorating sanitation, limited humanitarian access, and the ongoing rainy season are all factors accelerating the spread of the disease and hindering aid delivery.

For over a year, El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State in western Sudan, has been under siege by the Rapid Support Forces militia, with growing warnings about the severity of the humanitarian situation.

These warnings come alongside urgent appeals for immediate intervention to deliver humanitarian assistance, amid the spread of diseases, hunger, and food shortages among the city’s residents and displaced persons.
