The United Nations has stated that at least 80 people were killed in drone attacks that targeted the Abyei region on October 19.
In a statement, the UN mission in the area reported that it had provided medical treatment to 27 injured individuals, while noting that efforts to verify the total number of casualties are ongoing and that some people remain missing.
The Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General stated that the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) extinguished large fires caused by the attacks on the markets of Amiet and Todach, while peacekeeping personnel continue to evacuate victims and provide medical assistance.
Staff from the United Nations Mine Action Service are currently assessing the affected areas to detect any unexploded ordnance.
In response to a question regarding who was responsible for the attack, the Secretary-General’s spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, explained that the United Nations is not in a position to officially assign responsibility at this stage.
UNISFA continues to engage with the governments of Sudan and South Sudan, as well as other relevant parties, to support efforts toward de-escalation.
The United Nations reiterated the call made by the Secretary-General—who condemned the attacks—urging both governments to take all possible measures to prevent further attacks and to maintain the demilitarized status of Abyei. The UN also encouraged the continuation of dialogue through existing mechanisms, including the upcoming meeting of the Joint Political and Security Mechanism, scheduled to be held in Khartoum.
