US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Approves Another Bill on Sudan
Washington – Sudanhorizon – Mariam Abashar
The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday approved another bill on Sudan. The Sudanhorizon newswebsite reports that the new legislation is titled:
(Preventing external aggression and conflict escalation “PEACE” in Sudan)
According to a source familiar with the issue who spoke to Sudanhorizon , the bill, “Preventing External Aggression and Conflict Escalation in Sudan,” did not deviate from expected provisions. Its main articles focused on asking the US Departments of State and Treasury to submit reports on violations in Sudan, based on which US policy toward what it termed “the parties involved” would be assessed.
The bill also included directives to US representatives at international financial institutions to prevent Sudan from receiving any loans or aid under the current circumstances, while granting the president the authority to lift this provision if the security and political situation in Sudan improves. The source added that, otherwise, the new bill is a repetition of previous legislation.
The source pointed out that there are currently two bills concerning Sudan in both houses of the US Congress (the House of Representatives and the Senate), which were discussed this week. According to procedural rules, a single bill should be agreed upon by both the House and the Senate before being passed by Congress and sent to the President for his signature to become law.
The US House of Representatives passed the Sudan Peace Engagement Act last week.
