International Alliance to Support Sudan Announced in Chicago
Chicago – Sudanhorizon
Sudan’s Federal Minister of Health, Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, participated as a keynote speaker at the 2026 MedGlobal Conference and Awards, held in Chicago, United States.
This participation follows the outcomes of a high-level roundtable held in Washington in July 2026—convened by the Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA)—which focused on the humanitarian situation in Sudan, efforts toward recovery, and the reconstruction of the healthcare system amidst the ongoing conflict. The discussions also served to follow up on previous commitments, for which programs and projects are already being implemented within the country.
Addressing over 1,200 conference attendees, the Minister of Health explained that, despite unprecedented challenges, Sudan remains committed to restoring health services and rehabilitating damaged facilities. He emphasized that investment in the health sector is an investment in stability, peace, and the nation’s future.
Meanwhile, Alaa El-Tayeb Mudathir, Director General of International Health, spoke at several sessions, providing an overview of the health situation in Sudan and the country’s experience in engaging with partners and facilitating their operations.
The Minister’s inclusion in the conference—which brings together a distinguished group of experts and healthcare leaders from around the world to discuss global health issues and foster international cooperation—featured several sessions dedicated to the situation in Sudan. Sudan’s Ambassador to the United States, Mohamed Abdallah, also participated as a speaker during these sessions. At the conclusion of the conference, an international coalition for Sudan was announced, led by five organizations: MedGlobal, SAPA, Africa Relief, Humanity, and MedSudan. The number of organizations joining the coalition is expected to reach fifty over the coming year.
Additionally, the Minister of Health was honored with the “Leadership in Global Health” award, in recognition of his efforts—along with those of his team and Sudanese healthcare personnel—to maintain the health system and ensure its continued operation despite the devastating war and significant challenges.
