Sudan’s Minister of Finance, Dr. Gibril Ibrahim, met with Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Ekniti Nitithanaprapas, to discuss ways to strengthen economic cooperation and bilateral relations. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the annual meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund, which began two days ago in Bangkok, Thailand.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Finance, the discussion explored the possibility of leveraging Thailand’s experience in technical and vocational education and training (TVET). This includes developing capacity-building programs and training national personnel to enhance the technical skills of the youth, aligning training with labor market needs, creating job opportunities, and rebuilding productive capacities.
The two sides also examined opportunities to expand cooperation regarding recovery and reconstruction efforts in Sudan. This includes encouraging investments, strengthening the role of the private sector, and utilizing Thai expertise and technology to develop agricultural production and bolster food security. Furthermore, they explored areas of development cooperation aimed at restoring economic activity and fostering an environment conducive to sustainable growth.
Both parties emphasized the importance of maintaining ongoing communication between the relevant authorities in their respective countries to identify priority areas for cooperation and explore practical initiatives. Such efforts are intended to bolster the Sudanese-Thai partnership and support Sudan’s path toward recovery and development. The annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group are held in Washington, D.C., for two consecutive years, followed by one year in a different member country. The 2026 meetings are taking place in Bangkok, Thailand, with broad participation from finance ministers, central bank governors, and leaders of international organizations.
This year’s discussions focus on leveraging artificial intelligence and modern technology to support the recovery of developing economies and foster inclusive growth. Other key topics include the World Economic Outlook reports, challenges to sustainable development, the mobilization of private capital for development, blended finance instruments, and support for countries affected by crises or engaged in reform programs.
