New York – Sudanhorizon

The UN Security Council is set to receive a public briefing tomorrow (Friday), followed by closed consultations, regarding the situation in Sudan. This session is held in accordance with Resolution 2715, adopted on December 1, 2023, which requests the Secretary-General to provide a briefing every 120 days on UN efforts to “support Sudan on its pathway toward peace and stability.”

According to the Security Council’s website, Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, is expected to deliver a briefing during the public session, while Pekka Haavisto, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan, will provide an update during the closed consultations.

The report to be presented by DiCarlo will focus on the security situation in North Kordofan and around the city of El-Obeid, as well as attempts by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia to attack the city. Media reports indicate that drone strikes targeted a university dormitory and a shelter for displaced families in El-Obeid during the first few days of October, resulting in the deaths of at least ten people. Furthermore, reports state that a group of approximately ten drones attacked the city on October 9, leaving at least six civilians injured.
