Sudan Participates in a High-Level Event in Geneva on Women’s Economic Empowerment
Geneva – Sudanhorizon
Sudanese Minister Salima Ishaq Al-Khalifa Sharif, Head of the Advisory Office for Women and Children, participated as a keynote speaker in a high-level event focused on financing women’s economic empowerment as a dividend of peace. The event took place Thursday as part of the Geneva Peace Forum.
The Minister highlighted the pivotal role played by Sudanese women in sustaining livelihoods and maintaining economic and social activities, despite the repercussions of the war. She noted their active contribution to the resilience of local communities and the laying of foundations for recovery and social peace.
Ishaq emphasized the need to view women as a productive economic force and a key partner in recovery and reconstruction—moving beyond a narrow focus on humanitarian needs or the vulnerabilities caused by conflict—while recognizing their economic contributions and investing in their productive capacities.
She further explained that the Government of Sudan prioritizes women’s economic empowerment within its recovery and reconstruction agenda. This includes integrating these priorities into national recovery plans—guided by the 2025 Strategic Plan for Women—to enhance women’s participation in productive sectors and support the restoration of livelihoods and employment opportunities, particularly in areas of return. The government’s efforts to restore essential services, rehabilitate infrastructure, and revive economic activity in areas where security and stability have been re-established were highlighted. It was emphasized that enhancing women’s economic participation is a fundamental pillar for rebuilding the national economy and achieving sustainable recovery.
The Minister called upon international organizations and development partners to support these efforts through sustainable partnerships that align with national priorities, strengthen the capacities of government institutions, and provide the necessary funding for women’s productive initiatives. She reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to bolstering the role of women as active partners in recovery, reconstruction, and the consolidation of peace and stability.
