Mineral Resources Company: Challenges Behind Ariab Mining Company’s Declining Production

The Director General of the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company, Mohamed Tahir Omar, has revealed that Ariab Mining Company has faced significant challenges over the past five years that have led to a sharp decline in its production.

Speaking at a meeting attended by Ariab’s leadership, Minister of Minerals Nour El-Daem Taha, and Red Sea State Governor Lieutenant General Mustafa Mohamed Nour, Tahir said Ariab had once been one of Africa’s leading mining companies and enjoyed an international reputation, according to a statement issued by the company on Monday.

He noted that Ariab has faced a number of difficulties, including repeated protests by local communities and administrative challenges, which have negatively affected its operations.

Tahir described the Minister of Minerals’ visit to Ariab and its mining operations in Red Sea State as “historic,” noting that it was the first visit by a Sudanese minerals minister to the area in nearly a decade.

He announced that the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company would place all of its expertise and capabilities at the disposal of Ariab Mining Company to support efforts to rehabilitate the company and restore its leading role in Sudan’s mining sector.

He added that a strategic project planned for implementation at Ariab during the coming phase is expected to bring about a major transformation in the company’s performance and contribute positively to the development of the surrounding area by boosting production and promoting sustainable development.

Ariab Mining Company operates in the Ariab concession area in Sudan’s Red Sea State. It is home to the country’s first operational gold mine and produces not only gold but also zinc, copper, and silver.
