A senior Diplomatic Source Downplays the G7’s Recommendation on Arms Embargo Imposition on Sudan.

A senior diplomatic source has downplayed the significance of the G7’s recommendation to the UN Security Council to impose a comprehensive arms embargo on Sudan.
The source told Sudanhorizon that “imposing an embargo, or expanding the existing arms embargo in Darfur to encompass all of Sudan, has been a long-held desire of some European countries, even before the war ignited by the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia.”
The source, speaking to Sudanhorizon on Wednesday , added that Britain “has been and continues to lead this campaign and has repeatedly sought to pass this resolution within the UN Security Council, both before and after the war.”
The source added that British efforts and attempts have consistently been met with Russian rejection. He asserted that, according to available assessments, even if the matter were to reach the UN Security Council, Russia would use its veto right. Moscow fears that if such a resolution were passed, it would embolden other countries to implement similar measures in other regions where Russia has interests or strategic alliances.
The source ridiculed the very idea of the recommendation, stating that the Western countries advocating it failed to implement the UN Security Council resolution issued under Chapter VII, which imposed an arms embargo on Darfur in 2005 under Resolution 1951.
The diplomatic source has argued that these countries have proven their impotence by witnessing the flow of weapons into Darfur since the start of the war, some originating from European countries like Bulgaria. He further asserted that they are aware that mercenaries operate from within their own borders, as is the case in Britain, and therefore lack the moral authority to advocate for an arms embargo in any part of Sudan.
