Longest-Serving Congressman Accuses UAE of Being Behind “Genocide” in Sudan

Senator Bernie Sanders, the longest-serving independent member of the US Congress, issued a strongly worded statement on the war in Sudan, accusing the United Arab Emirates of plundering billions of dollars worth of Sudanese gold. He stated that the UAE’s pursuit of Sudan’s mineral resources is the reason behind its funding of genocide for years in Sudan through the Rapid Support Forces militia.
In a statement released on Thursday, Sanders added, that Trump’s close friend and staunch US ally, the dictatorial regime of the United Arab Emirates, run by one of the world’s wealthiest families, has been “funding and facilitating this genocide for years.” He added that this is happening to ensure that billions of dollars of looted gold from Sudan flow directly into the pockets of the Emirati oligarchy, further enriching a family of billionaires. He said this has been documented by the United Nations, independent journalists, and international human rights organizations.
Sanders cited a list documenting the consequences of the UAE’s intervention in Sudan through the Rapid Support Forces, asserting that this is the scale of this war: at least 59,000 people killed since 2023, with credible estimates reaching 150,000. 14 million people displaced from their homes. 30 million people, two-thirds of Sudan’s population, in dire need of humanitarian assistance simply to survive.
The congressman emphasized that he does not consider his country complicit in genocide, stressing that US foreign policy must be based on respect for democracy and human rights, and that the time has come for Congress to act.
He stressed that the US Congress must demand that the UAE cease its military support for the Rapid Support Forces and work with the international community and the Sudanese people to end this horrific conflict and provide the desperately needed humanitarian aid.
