Tripartite Coordination to Safeguard Groundwater and Reduce Environmental Risks in Gedaref

The Regional Office of the General Directorate of Geological Research in Gedaref State, headed by Consultant Geologist Bashir Ahmed Hamid, held a joint meeting with the State Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources to discuss ways of strengthening cooperation and coordination in protecting natural resources and mitigating environmental impacts, with a particular focus on safeguarding groundwater and enhancing environmental monitoring and oversight programs.

The meeting addressed several priority issues, foremost among them the status of groundwater resources in the state and measures to protect them from various sources of pollution. Participants also examined the potential impacts of wastewater and sewage systems on groundwater quality, given that groundwater remains one of the most important strategic resources relied upon by local communities for drinking water and agricultural use.

The two sides agreed to establish a joint database for geological and environmental information to support planning and decision-making processes. They also agreed to strengthen environmental monitoring programs, community awareness initiatives, and efforts to promote a culture of environmental conservation and sustainable management of natural resources. The meeting further emphasized the importance of developing institutional coordination mechanisms among relevant authorities to ensure sound natural resource management. An agreement was reached to prepare a joint action plan involving all relevant stakeholders, aimed at enhancing compliance with environmental standards and advancing sustainable development goals.

In a separate development, the branch office of the General Directorate of Geological Research in Gedaref State held a joint meeting with the state’s Minerals Security Administration as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation and coordination between the two entities and improve technical work mechanisms. The discussions highlighted the importance of exchanging technical and security-related information and data to enhance oversight and ensure the optimal utilization of mineral resources in accordance with established regulations and guidelines.
