Senior Trump Advisor Comments on UN Security Council Vote Regarding Sudan

Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to the United States for Arab and African Affairs, has announced that his country’s priorities in Sudan remain achieving an immediate humanitarian truce, protecting civilians, and ensuring the safe, rapid, and unhindered delivery of life-saving aid.

In a statement posted on his official X account following the UN Security Council’s vote on Friday —which extended the arms embargo on Darfur for only one month on a “technical” basis, contrary to the U.S. request for a one-year extension covering all of Sudan—Boulos affirmed his country’s commitment to the “Quartet Roadmap,” the “Berlin Declaration,” and the “Quintet’s” political track.

He also reiterated support for a genuine, inclusive, Sudanese-led peace process that ends the conflict and leads to a credible transition toward a civilian-led government reflecting the aspirations of the Sudanese people.

Commenting on the vote result, he added, that following consultations with US allies and other parties, it was decided support a short-term technical extension of the UN Security Council resolution regarding the arms embargo on Sudan.

Boulos explained that this measure allows additional space for diplomatic efforts at a critical moment for the Sudanese people, though he emphasized that a long-term technical extension of this mandate is “not an option.” Boulos urged the UN Security Council to use this period to negotiate in good faith on expanding the embargo to address the current reality of the conflict. He added, in strong terms, that any member considering opposing the expansion of the arms embargo risks being complicit with those destroying Sudan, stating that inaction means further suffering and death—which is unacceptable—and that “we refuse to give perfunctory approval to the continuation of the status quo for another year.”
