Sudan’s JEM calls for an end to tribal fighting in South Darfur
Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
The Sudanese Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) on Monday expressed deep concern regarding the clashes that erupted between the Bani Halba and Salamat tribes, and which resulted in heavy losses of life and property. The movement called for an immediate cessation of all hostilities.
In a press statement issued by Deputy Secretary of Information Hassan Ibrahim Fadl, JEM urged all social groups and community leaders in the region to prioritize wisdom and work to thwart those it called “advocates of sedition and chaos.”
The movement held the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia fully responsible for creating the environment that allowed these conflicts and disputes to erupt in the region.
It indicated that these clashes are a consequence of the security vacuum created by the militia through the dismantling of state institutions, the weakening of the rule of law, and the spread of chaos in the areas under its control.
The movement asserted that the escalation of tribal and regional conflicts is linked to a so-called “establishment” project aimed at reshaping Darfur along ethnic, tribal, and regional lines, thereby threatening the unity of the social fabric and fueling polarization among Sudanese communities.
In its statement, JEM emphasized that the future of Darfur could not be built on tribal segregation or regional hegemony, but rather rests fundamentally on the principles of equal citizenship, national unity, and the rule of law.
The movement appealed to the Sudanese people to remain cohesive and united, and to form a broad national front to confront these projects of discord and fragmentation.
