Darfur Community Groups in Britain Urge Congress to Expedite Terrorist Designation of RSF

The Association of Darfur Community Organizations in the United Kingdom has called on the U.S. Congress to expedite the designation of the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as a terrorist organization. It also urged members of the House of Representatives to accelerate consideration of the relevant legislation, bring it to a vote, and make a decisive determination on the designation.

In a statement issued Thursday and reviewed by Sudanhorizon, the association welcomed the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s vote, by 44 votes to 2, on a resolution concerning the war in Sudan, as well as calls by members of Congress for tougher measures and sanctions to protect civilians.

The association said its call for the RSF to be designated as a terrorist organization is based on what it described as an extensive record of crimes and violations against civilians, including mass killings, sexual violence, torture, starvation, and forced displacement. It also cited the findings of the United Nations Fact-Finding Mission regarding crimes committed in El Fasher.

The association further called on the British government, the European Union, and the international community to adopt similar positions and measures against the RSF and its financing and support networks.

The statement stressed that the time for merely issuing condemnations and expressing concern has passed, arguing that the Sudanese people need concrete international action to protect civilians, halt the financing of the war, and hold those responsible for crimes accountable.
