Kenya’s Kalonzo Musyoka Urges Sudan to Lift Ban on Tea Imports

The Kenyan opposition leader and former Vice-President, Kalonzo Musyoka,said on Thursday that he had delivered a memorandum to the Sudanese embassy in Nairobi urging the Sudanese government to lift the ban imposed on Kenyan tea imports since March 2025. He emphasized that the Sudanese ban has caused significant losses to Kenya’s tea industry.
He explained that Sudan was among the top five markets for Kenyan tea, with annual imports of approximately 35 million kilograms worth $70 million. He added that more than 3.44 million kilograms of tea, valued at over $10.3 million, remain stored at the port of Mombasa, unable to be exported.
He expressed hope that discussions with Sudanese Ambassador Kamal Jabara and the embassy staff would lead to a solution that would allow trade between the two countries to resume.
