Sudan Reaffirms its Support for Egypt
Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon
Sudan has renewed its supportive position for its northern neighbor Egypt “for its role and efforts in achieving just peace in Palestine.”
The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press statement seen by the Sudanhorizon news website: “The government of the Republic of Sudan condemns the statements of the Israeli Prime Minister issued on September 2, in which he implicated Egypt’s name in order to evade reaching a ceasefire in Gaza and his government’s ongoing violations against the Palestinian people and completing the process of exchanging hostages and detainees.”
He continued: “Sudan renews its full solidarity with the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt and its support for its historic role in achieving just peace in Palestine and rejects any attempt to question that role to justify aggressive policies that lead to more congestion and escalation in the region and obstruct sincere efforts to establish peace in the region.”
On Tuesday, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry expressed Egypt’s rejection of statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in which he claimed that Hamas obtains weapons through the Philadelphia Corridor separating the Gaza Strip and Egypt.
He also stressed that Israel “must control the Philadelphi Corridor”, describing it as “the oxygen and arms pipeline for Hamas”, while acknowledging the existence of a dispute within his government regarding the decision to have an Israeli military presence in the corridor.
The Philadelphia Corridor, or “Salah al-Din Corridor”, is a 14-kilometer-long strip located along the Gaza-Egypt border, and is supposed to be a demilitarized zone under the 1979 peace agreement between Egypt and Israel, but the Israeli army currently controls it.
