Sudanese Finance Minister Discusses Reconstruction Efforts with ADB President

Finance Minister Dr. Jibril Ibrahim met on Friday with the President of the African Development Bank (ADB)Group, Dr. Sidi Ould Tah, to discuss the course of joint cooperation between Sudan and the African Development Bank, given the historical ties between the two parties, as Sudan is one of the Bank’s founding members.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Bank’s annual meetings currently being held in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.
The meeting was attended by Osman Hussein, Sudan’s Ambassador to Congo-Kinshasa, Mr. Alex Mubiro, the African Development Bank’s Regional Director for East Africa, and a number of experts and technical staff.
A press release issued by the Ministry of Finance stated that the Minister congratulated the President of the African Development Bank Group on assuming his leadership, praising the achievements scored during his first year. He also reviewed the economic and social repercussions of the war and the extent of the damage inflicted on infrastructure and productive and service sectors, particularly electricity, education, health, and drinking water. He emphasized the importance of the Bank’s contribution to reconstruction efforts and supporting economic recovery. The Minister also called for the Bank to continue its integration of the agricultural sector by facilitating access to production inputs in a way that strengthens the summer agricultural season and enhances food security.
For his part, Dr. Sidi Ould Tah affirmed the African Development Bank Group’s commitment to continuing its support for Sudan in the productive and service sectors. He noted that they were exploring ways to bolster the agricultural sector using resources allocated to Sudan and to expedite the implementation of existing projects, particularly the wheat production project being implemented in cooperation with the World Food Programme (WFP).
Ould Tah explained that the Bank has allocated funding for several new projects, including the Port Sudan Water Project and the Solar-Powered Irrigation Pumps Project, to support the agricultural sector.
The meetings witnessed the signing of an agreement for a project to strengthen the resilience of agricultural and food systems, valued at US$83 million.
The Minister extended an invitation to the President of the African Development Bank Group to visit Sudan at the earliest opportunity. The President welcomed the invitation and affirmed his commitment to accepting the invitation in support of the ongoing cooperation.
