Workers’ Union Condemns Staff Reductions and Intends to Reject the Decision
Sudanhorizon – Hala Hamza
The Executive Office of the General Federation of Sudanese Workers’ Unions has expressed its total rejection of the decision to cut down the numbers of state employees, as was recently issued under Ministerial Decree No. (22) based on a recommendation from the Council of Ministers.
In a statement to Sudanhorizon Fadlallah Abdel-Hafiz, a leader in the Federation of Sudanese Workers’ Unions, said that the Federation’s Executive Office affirmed its opposition to the reductions during a meeting it held today, Monday, in Khartoum.
The meeting was held in the presence of the Civil Service Pensioners Union, the National Pensions Fund, and the General Union of Service Committees.
Abdel-Hafiz criticized the exclusion of the Federation from the membership of the committee formed by the Minister of Human Resources for this purpose, and denounced the lack of consultation before issuing this critical decision for its members working in the state, stressing that they would be harmed by any decision issued by this committee. Abdel-Hafiz indicated that the meeting affirmed that the approach to limiting, sorting, and reducing the number of state employees contradicts international laws and agreements concerning the right to work.
He also confirmed the Executive Office’s intention to issue a clarifying statement declaring its complete rejection of the decision, in coordination with the state unions, due to what he termed the “top-down” nature of the decision, its disregard for international laws, its inappropriate timing, and its unjustified dismissal of employees and public servants – as he put it.
Abdel-Hafiz added that the meeting also discussed the delay in the recent salary increase approved by the government, which the Federal Ministry of Finance has yet to implement despite the issuance of a circular authorizing the increase. He emphasized the need for applying this increase to all state employees, not just those in Khartoum.
The labor leader explained that the meeting also addressed the situation of employees within the fund, their entitlements, and how to address them. He pointed out that a large number of pensioners from 2020-2021 have not yet received their entitlements. An understanding was reached regarding these problems, and ways to resolve them were explored.
