Al-Gezirah University Media Forum Launches National Dialogue on Media Role at Times of Transition

The Sudanese Media Forum, held at the Faculty of Media at Al-Gezirah University, on Wednesday started, in the Martyrs’ Hall at the Al-Nashishiba Complex. The forum’s theme is “Sudanese Media: The Pulse of the Nation and the Memory of the Homeland.”
The opening ceremony witnessed significant participation from academia, media, and professional leaders, reflecting a growing awareness of the need to redefine the role of media to keep pace with current national transformations.
In his opening remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Media, Professor Ayman Hashim Awad Al-Karim, affirmed that the forum’s launch marks the beginning of a scholarly and intellectual movement aimed at establishing a sustainable platform for dialogue on Sudanese media issues. He explained that media is no longer merely a means for information, but has become a key player in shaping collective consciousness and formulating societal values. He emphasized that academic responsibility requires the faculty to assume a leading role in analyzing the current state of media and diagnosing its challenges using a rigorous scientific methodology, while offering practical and applicable solutions.
The Dean of the College also called for strengthening integration between academic institutions and media work environments, ensuring that scientific research becomes an effective tool for professional development that transcends isolated theoretical frameworks. He pointed out that building a strong media begins in classrooms, is reinforced through training, and is solidified through serious dialogue platforms.
For his part, Professor Obaid Mirghani, representative of the Ministry of Culture and Information, praised Al-Gezirah University’s initiative, considering it a reflection of its pioneering role and close connection to societal issues. He stated that the forum represents a model of partnership integration in the media field to reach recommendations that respond to the challenges of reality.
Mirghani noted that the forum’s importance is amplified by the critical stage Sudan is going through, where the urgent need is for a professional and responsible media that supports reconstruction and nation-building efforts by enhancing public awareness, consolidating stability, and conveying facts objectively.
He expressed his confidence in the forum’s ability to produce visions that contribute to establishing a new media era that serves the nation’s aspirations.
In the same vein, the Director of Al-Gezirah University, Professor Salah al-Din Muhammad al-Arabi, focused on the repercussions of the war on the social fabric, emphasizing that these challenges impose a heightened responsibility on educational and media institutions.
He pointed out that the Faculty of Media is required to play a pivotal role in promoting a media discourse that contributes to rebuilding trust among the various segments of society. He explained that the university places community service at the heart of its strategy and relies on scientific research as a fundamental tool to achieve this goal, particularly in issues related to media and its impact.
The university director announced his full support for the forum’s outcomes and pledged to work towards transforming its recommendations into practical programs and initiatives, stressing the importance of sustaining and developing this momentum.
The participants’ interventions reflected a broad consensus that Sudanese media stands at a critical juncture requiring a comprehensive review of its roles and tools, and that the integration of academia and professional practice represents the optimal path to building a national media capable of facing challenges and contributing effectively to the reconstruction of society and the state.
