IGAD Executive Secretary: Sudan’s Peace Process Must Remain Sudanese-Led

The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Workneh Gebeyehu, addressed the Third Forum of Special Envoys and Representatives for Sudan on Tuesday in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. In his remarks, he stressed that “the conflict in Sudan has far-reaching consequences for both the country and the wider region, underscoring the urgent need for stronger coordination among regional and international actors engaged in peace efforts.”

The forum was attended by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi.

In a post on his X account, Gebeyehu said he emphasized “the need for a joint strategic assessment, greater complementarity, and a clear division of responsibilities among partners.” He added that this coordination should involve the African Union, the United Nations, the League of Arab States, the European Union, the Quartet, the Quintet, and other key partners.

Gebeyehu reiterated that Sudan’s peace process “must remain Sudanese-led, supported by coordinated efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability.”
