IGAD Secretary and UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy Discuss Restructuring the Quintet

The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Workneh Gebeyehu, discussed with the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, ways to strengthen the restructuring of the quintet committee concerned with Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue, which includes IGAD, the African Union, the United Nations, the League of Arab States, and the European Union.

The meeting, held in the Kenyan capital Nairobi on the sidelines of the IGAD mediation conference, explored ways to achieve peace in Sudan, with a commitment to establishing an accountability mechanism and coordinating diplomatic efforts to enhance a comprehensive, Sudanese-led mediation process that addresses the root causes of the conflict and works toward achieving lasting peace.
