The General Secretariat of the Arab National Conference reaffirmed its commitment to defending the just causes of the Arab nation, calling upon the nation to unite efforts, strengthen solidarity, and confront shared challenges with awareness and a sense of responsibility.
A press statement issued by the General Secretariat on Friday—following its meeting in Beirut, Lebanon—outlined the discussions held in preparation for the 35th session of the Arab National Conference, scheduled for next November. The statement noted that the situation in Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, the Horn of Africa, and the Nile Valley was reviewed, articulating the General Secretariat’s positions regarding events in these regions.
The statement devoted significant attention to the situation in the “Horn of Africa and the Nile Valley,” emphasizing that the General Secretariat is monitoring “with grave concern the developments in the Horn of Africa and the Nile Valley, amidst escalating US and Israeli penetration into certain areas of the region—particularly Somaliland—and growing Ethiopian interference in the internal affairs of states. Such actions threaten the independence, unity, and security of Somalia, and undermine Arab national security as well as the security of the Horn of Africa and Nile Valley region.”
The General Secretariat of the Arab National Conference affirmed that it is monitoring with concern “Ethiopia’s efforts to gain access to the sea through the territories of Somalia and Eritrea, and the resulting geopolitical arrangements that threaten the sovereignty, security, and stability of Somalia and Eritrea. It warns against an Ethiopian scheme to ignite a regional war in the Horn of Africa and against the renewal of its collusion with Western powers, given the danger this poses to Arab national security and the security of the region. It calls for respect for state sovereignty and good-neighborly relations.”
The General Secretariat also affirmed that it is monitoring with concern “the role of the Ethiopian regime in the aggression against Sudan, and the launching of military operations from Ethiopian territory, as this constitutes a violation of Sudan’s sovereignty, security, and stability. While reiterating its support for Sudan, the General Secretariat calls for an end to hostile acts against it and urges that Ethiopian territory not be used as a launching pad for any military operations targeting Sudan or other neighboring countries.”
The General Secretariat warned against the use of water as a weapon or a tool of pressure against Egypt and Sudan, noting the direct threat this poses to Arab water security and the security of the Nile Valley. It called for an end to such practices and for adherence to the rules of international law and relevant agreements, in a manner that preserves the rights of downstream states and safeguards security and stability in the region.
The General Secretariat’s statement commended “the Alamein Summit—convened by Egypt and attended by Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, and Somalia—and the understandings reached therein.” It called for “developing the outcomes of that summit into a regional security framework that fosters security and stability in the region and protects Arab interests there.”
