Hundreds of Homes Destroyed, at least 7 IDPs killed as Fire broke in Camp in Jebel Mara, Darfur
Golo – Sudanhorizon
Seven people, including five children and two women, were burned to death in a massive fire that broke out on Monday in a camp for Internally Displaced Persons in the Golo area, Jebel Mara, Darfur.
At least 12 IDPs were also injured, some critically, while more than 400 makeshift shelters and homes were gutted down, leaving thousands of families without shelter and in dire humanitarian conditions.
Adam Rijal Mursal, the official spokesperson for the Darfur Displaced Persons and Refugees Coordination, has attributed in a statement the devastation to overcrowding in the camp and the flimsy shelters built from highly flammable local materials contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, which quickly engulfed most of the dwellings.
Mursal noted that the fire has had a profound psychological and social impact on the displaced people, who “already suffer from extreme poverty and a lack of humanitarian aid, and now face a double tragedy and devastating losses.”
The Coordination Committee has appealed to humanitarian organizations and all people of conscience, both within and outside the country, to provide urgent assistance to those affected, including alternative shelter and medical treatment for the injured.
The statement warned that the continued disregard for the suffering of displaced people in Sudan is “a stain on the conscience of humanity,” stressing the need to awaken the world’s conscience before these tragedies become mere forgotten headlines.
