Sudan’s Ambassador to Ethiopia Holds Intensive Meetings Ahead of Berlin Conference
Addis Ababa – Sudanhorizon
Continuing the efforts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and its diplomatic missions to garner regional and international support for Sudan’s position, and as part of proactive measures ahead of the Berlin Conference scheduled for the 14th of this month, Ambassador Al-Zein Ibrahim Hussein, Sudan’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, held a series of diplomatic meetings with a number of international and regional officials and envoys concerned with Sudanese affairs.
The meetings included the African Union Special Envoy to Sudan, Ambassador Mohamed Belaiche; the IGAD Special Envoy to Sudan, Laurence Korbandi; the Head of the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy, Colmi Mohamed; and the Deputy Head of the League of Arab States Mission to Ethiopia and the African Union. The Ambassador also sent official notes to the French Special Envoy to Sudan and the Horn of Africa, Ambassador Bertrand Cochery, and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa, Kwang Cong.
According to a statement from the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Al-Zein explained the Sudanese government’s position on the Berlin Conference, emphasizing that holding such a meeting while deliberately excluding Sudan does not contribute to resolving the crisis and is seen as disregards Sudan’s sovereign right to determine the path to a national solution.
He also stressed that the government has a comprehensive national vision embodied in the Sudanese peace initiative presented by the Prime Minister to the Security Council, which has been welcomed by the United Nations, the African Union, the League of Arab States, IGAD, and other parties.
He affirmed Sudan’s rejection of the so-called Quartet, due to its inclusion of the primary supporter of the rebel militia, while commending the positive engagement with the United States, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, and appreciating their efforts in supporting peace and stability.
The ambassador criticized the selective approach in inviting civil forces and focusing on voices loyal to the militia, which hinders national solutions that express the will of the Sudanese people. He reiterated the Sudanese government’s openness to serious and impartial initiatives that respect Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, contribute to stopping the war, preventing the flow of weapons and foreign support to the militia, providing justice for the victims, and supporting the peaceful democratic transition leading to security, stability, and development.
