The jury of the 12th annual Commission Optimists Awards announced that Sudanese writer and novelist Abdelaziz Baraka Sakin has been awarded the 2026 Freedom of Expression Award in recognition of his “courageous literary career and unwavering commitment to the causes of human rights and dignity.”
The award citation, signed by Editor-in-Chief Julia Higueras, stated that this honor recognizes Sakin’s career, characterized by integrity and resilience in the face of challenges. The jury described the writer’s voice as “a powerful testament against censorship and injustice,” praising his role in defending fundamental rights despite the persecution and exile he has endured.

The jury affirmed that Baraka Sakin’s literary works continue to inspire awareness and international dialogue on freedom of expression, embodying a deep commitment to the ethical and humanitarian values upheld by the award.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in Madrid, Spain, on May 7th at 7:00 PM at the Reina Sofía National Art Museum, one of Europe’s most important cultural and artistic landmarks.

This award is given to individuals who contribute significant moral value to the international community and is overseen by the international magazine Anoche Tuve un Sueño, which focuses on social and cultural issues with a humanitarian dimension.

This win is a new accolade added to Baraka Sakin’s distinguished career and a well-deserved recognition for Sudanese literature on the international stage.

This new international honor follows a series of prestigious awards received by Sakin, most notably the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters), awarded to him by the French Ministry of Culture in 2023, one of the world’s highest cultural honors.

The writer Baraka Sakin has clear positions opposing the Rapid Support Forces militia and its regional and local backers, calling for the Rapid Support Forces militia to be classified as a terrorist organization, and supporting the Sudanese Armed Forces in the Battle of Dignity.
