Cairo – Sudanhorizon
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty spoke by phone on Saturday with his Saudi counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan, to discuss current regional developments, particularly the situation in Sudan. They called for the withdrawal of armed militias from Sudanese cities.
The official spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, stated that the call addressed the escalating tensions in the region.
Both ministers emphasized the importance of de-escalation and intensifying efforts to reduce tensions and contain crises through political and negotiated solutions.
They rejected the logic of escalation and the use of force, stressing the need to continue diplomatic channels and constructive dialogue to support regional security and stability and prevent the region from sliding into further instability.
The spokesperson added that the two ministers also discussed the deteriorating humanitarian and security situation in Sudan and efforts to support de-escalation.
They emphasized the importance of quickly reaching a humanitarian truce as a prelude to a comprehensive ceasefire and the launch of a comprehensive, Sudanese-owned political process.
They emphasized the priority of establishing safe humanitarian corridors and zones for innocent civilians, especially in light of the massacres and grave atrocities committed by armed militias in El Fasher, stressing the importance of the militia withdrawal to ensure the safety of civilians.
Minister Abdel-Aty reiterated Egypt’s unwavering support for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and for preserving its national institutions, rejecting any attempts to equate state institutions with armed militias.
